A huge well done to the team on Ward 9 at the University Hospital of North Durham for their outstanding work in reducing falls through a dedicated quality improvement initiative.

Recognising the need to enhance patient safety, the team has focused specifically on reducing falls in bathrooms – a high-risk area for such incidents.

As part of their initiative, Ward 9 has introduced the use of the colour yellow, paired with a sunflower symbol, to identify patients who may be at an increased risk of falling.

This visual cue has been instrumental in raising awareness among staff, ensuring patients receive the additional support they need.

The initiative complements the ward's ongoing work on comprehensive falls assessments and compliance with lying and standing blood pressure checks – both key elements in promoting safe mobilisation.

Their hard work and commitment have already shown measurable success, contributing to safer patient outcomes and a positive impact on overall care.

Congratulations to everyone on Ward 9 for their innovative approach and dedication to patient safety.
