This year’s Disability History Month shines a spotlight on the theme ‘Disability, Livelihood, and Employment,’ highlighting the importance of supporting individuals with disabilities in their professional lives.
One of the key tools available to disabled individuals in employment is the UK Government's Access to Work scheme, which offers practical assistance to overcome workplace barriers.
What is Access to Work?
The Access to Work scheme provides funding and resources tailored to meet individual workplace needs. Support options include:
- Specialised equipment to assist with work tasks.
- Travel costs for those who cannot use public transport.
- Personal support workers to aid in specific job responsibilities.
This initiative ensures that disabled employees can thrive in their roles and maintain meaningful employment.
How Can I Use Access to Work?
The scheme is designed to provide flexible support, and CDDFT colleagues can explore its benefits through the following steps:
- Learn more: Visit gov.uk/access-to-work for full details.
- Seek guidance: CDDFT staff can access advice through Occupational Health by submitting a self or management referral.
- Use the Health Passport: This Trust tool facilitates conversations between employees and managers, helping identify workplace adjustments and support.
What Happens After Applying?
Once an application is submitted, a representative from Access to Work will contact the applicant to progress the request. This may include providing additional details or arranging an appointment with an assessor to identify the best solutions.
