At County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT), we are proud to support young adults in gaining valuable work experience through supported internships.
One such inspiring story is that of Molly, whose journey with Choices College highlights the power of opportunity, resilience, and growth.
Embracing a New Challenge
Molly began her supported internship with Choices College as a Nursery Assistant. However, she soon found herself on a new path, taking on the role of a Ward Hostess at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
This transition was both exciting and challenging, requiring Molly to quickly adapt to a fast-paced hospital environment and integrate into a brand-new team.
Overcoming Challenges
Adjusting to hospital life was not easy. The responsibilities of a Ward Hostess demanded strong communication skills, confidence, and the ability to navigate a busy workplace.
Despite facing initial anxiety, Molly approached her new role with determination.
With each shift, she became more comfortable in her surroundings, learning to work collaboratively with coplleagues and providing essential support to patients.
One of Molly’s greatest strengths has been her willingness to ask for help when needed.
This not only supported her own development but also strengthened her ability to work effectively within her team.
By embracing challenges head-on, she built resilience and self-assurance, proving her ability to thrive in a hospital setting.
A Supportive Environment
CDDFT’s partnership with Choices College plays a key role in creating inclusive employment opportunities.
Choices College is a specialist college that works with young people who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities, helping them gain workplace experience and develop essential skills for the future.
Christine, Catering Services Manager at Darlington Memorial Hospital, expressed her enthusiasm for the programme: "Darlington Memorial Hospital is thrilled to be a part of Molly’s journey. Our collaboration with Choices College enables young individuals like Molly to develop essential skills and gain hands-on experience, paving the way for successful future employment."
Securing a Future in Healthcare
Thanks to her hard work, perseverance, and the support of her mentors, Molly has now successfully secured a role as a Ward Hostess at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
Her journey from a shy intern to a confident hospital team member is a testament to what can be achieved when determination meets the right opportunities.
At CDDFT, we remain committed to working with partners like Choices College to enhance accessibility in the healthcare workforce, ensuring that young people with learning difficulties and disabilities can pursue fulfilling careers.
Molly’s story is just one example of the positive impact supported internships can have - not only on the individuals involved but also on the wider healthcare community.
We are incredibly proud of Molly and look forward to seeing her continue to thrive in her new role.
