Coming into our Emergency Departments

Our emergency departments are for serious illnesses and injuries only.

If you dont't need emergency treatment you may be turned away and directed to a different service.

Visit www.111.nhs.uk who will direct you to the care you need.

To protect our patients, visitors and our workforce we have a number of safety measures in place.

We have two separate emergency departments at both University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital.

There is a 'respiratory' department for patients with COVID-19 and 'non-respiratory' department for all other emergencies.

If you come into one of our emergency departments and you need to be admitted then you will be tested for COVID-19, even if you have no symptoms.

Our emergency departments follow all infection prevention and control recommendations, including social distancing, to help protect our patients, visitors and our staff.

'As I was very, very nervous, I must have been the worst patient ever and they were brilliant with me and I can't thank them enough - could you please pass on my sincere thanks.'
