Enhancing the leadership of our maternity services

maternity services

We are pleased to announce two new appointments to key leadership positions within our maternity services. Gergana Nikolova will be joining us as the Director of Midwifery on 15 February, and Michelle Watson will be taking on the role of Head of Midwifery (North) on a 6-month secondment from 8 February.

Gergana brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our organisation. With thirty-one years of experience in the field of midwifery, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a deep commitment to providing high-quality care to birthing people and their families. She is currently Deputy Director of Midwifery at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. Gergana will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of our maternity services as we continue to foster a positive and inclusive work experience for our teams and ensure the delivery of safe and compassionate care.

Michelle has an impressive background in midwifery currently working at Northumbria NHS Foundation Trust. Michelle will be responsible for acute and community maternity services in the north of our patch and work alongside our Head of Midwifery, Joanne Crawford who will lead acute and community services in the South.

Together, they will be supporting the Director of Midwifery in managing the day-to-day operations of the services, promoting best practice and building on our culture of continuous improvement.

We are confident that both Gergana and Michelle will make significant contributions to our Trust and help us further enhance the quality of care we provide to our birthing people and their families.

Their expertise, passion, and dedication will only further strengthen and enhance the leadership of our maternity services serving to inspire and motivate our teams to move forward together and to ensure we are providing safe, supported experiences for all.

'I cannot commend the clinic enough. It is marvellous we have this service at all and well done to you all.'
