HSJ Partnership Awards 2024 – we’re Bronze Winners!

HSJ winners.jpg

We're delighted to share with you that last Thursday evening, at an awards ceremony in London, our joint project with Philips - working together to green critical care - won bronze in the Environmental Sustainability Project of the Year Category!

Our joint entry involved a CDDFT 360-sustainability assessment in 2022 through which we identified improvement and optimisation opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint and material waste in the Intensive Care Unit at Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Critical care was chosen as a focus area because it represents a significant portion of the NHS carbon footprint and is one of the most expensive types of care.

Following the analysis, the department implemented a number of recommended initiatives in 2023, including staff reminders on sustainability requirements and environmental impact from activities; prevention of unnecessary waste and ensuring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use is appropriate to each patient and not a blanket policy.

There is also much more learning from this project which we will share with you soon.

'I would like to thank all the staff for my treatment and their professionalism.'
