Information about maternity services

If you are planning on coming to Darlington or Durham to have your baby, we understand you may have some worries following reports in the local press this week.

We would like to offer reassurance that an independent report of our maternity services did conclude that the services are safe.

The report did also highlight areas for improvement and areas of potential risk. We are acting on these with support from NHS England and local clinical commissioning groups particularly to improve team working and relationships within the service.

We have put in place new arrangements to manage and support twin pregnancies and deliveries in Darlington. Ante-natal clinics will continue at Darlington Memorial Hospital under the care of a specialist from South Tees NHS Foundation Trust, and deliveries will be managed at James Cook Hospital. Annually, we deliver around 3,000 babies at Darlington Memorial Hospital. Approximately 25 -30 of these will be twin deliveries.

This is a relatively low number and by working with South Tees Foundation Trust on the new arrangements it will mean our multi-disciplinary team is able to benefit from exposure to specialist skills and experience. The arrangements also mean we can offer our ladies local access to a specialist through twin pregnancy clinics at Darlington and assurance that their delivery will also take place under this specialist care. If you are booked to have twins with us at Darlington Memorial Hospital then one of our midwives will be contacting you, if they have not already, to talk you through the changes.

If you do have any concerns or questions about your planned delivery then please contact your named midwife.
