Major Upgrade for Endoscopy Unit at University Hospital of North Durham: Temporary Closure for Essential Works

The endoscopy unit at University Hospital of North Durham is set to undergo essential works to upgrade the facilities, ensuring it meets the latest standards and accreditation requirements. This significant development marks a major step forward in enhancing patient care and service delivery.

During the renovation period, which begins on Monday 3 June 2024, and is expected to last for approximately six months, the endoscopy unit will be temporarily closed.

Patients requiring endoscopy services will not experience any disruption in their care, as alternative arrangements have been made to accommodate them at Bishop Auckland Hospital or Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Felicity White, Associate Director of Operations said: "We are excited about the positive changes this upgrade will bring to the department at University Hospital of North Durham. We will not only modernise the unit and improve patient experience in terms of privacy, dignity and comfort but also utilise the space to its full potential. It will also support us with national accreditation of the high quality service that we deliver.

"We would like to reassure patients that there will be no delay in their treatment whilst the unit is temporarily closed. We have two new additional rooms at Bishop Auckland Hospital which we can utilise so there should be no impact on capacity or waiting times, although we recognise that some patients may need to travel further.

"We look forward to welcoming patients back to a unit that is truly fit for purpose and reflective of our dedication to providing safe, compassionate and joined-up care that is patient-centred."

The forthcoming upgrades will transform the endoscopy unit into a more modern, efficient, and patient-friendly facility. The enhancements are designed to create a more comfortable environment for patients and staff, streamline operational processes, and integrate advanced medical technologies.

These improvements are crucial for ensuring that the unit meets the stringent standards necessary for accreditation, reflecting the Trust's commitment to providing high-quality healthcare services.

This upgrade is part of CDDFT's ongoing commitment to quality care. The refurbished endoscopy unit will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, enhancing diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

'Care received was fantastic and I was very well looked after and very impressed.'
