Shotley Bridge Hospital - Update

Update from NHS Property Services, NHS North Durham CCG and County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust regarding Shotley Bridge Community Hospital:

As health partners we are committed to delivering healthcare services and facilities in the Consett and North Durham area. The recent relocation of inpatients from Shotley Bridge Community Hospital was a result of the increasing risk to patient safety posed by an issue with the water and drainage infrastructure on the site.

The relocation means NHS Property Services, as the owner of the hospital building, now has unrestricted access to further investigate the full extent of the problem identified.  NHS Property Services will now conduct a more detailed review of the issue and identify the options available to address the issues. This work will also establish the likely impact on services operating on the site, timeframes for work and costs.

Once this information is available local healthcare partners can review the implications for the site for the short and long term including potential costs and timeframes for any programme of works.

We expect the report to be completed by mid to late November. Once we have had an opportunity to consider this information we will be arranging a series of engagement events at the hospital to share this information and discuss any queries from our local communities.

In response to queries about the potential disposal of the site for housing development, NHS Property Services Ltd can confirm that the site is not for sale.  As the property is required for delivery of local healthcare services it will continue to be used for that purpose.
