World Diabetes Day

Clinical experts in diabetes will be offering advice and support to members of the public from a marquee in Durham market place, on Monday 14 November, World Diabetes Day.

Dr Srikanth Mada, lead clinician for diabetes, explains, "We have a multi-disciplinary team, dedicated to caring for people with diabetes, keeping them as healthy as possible so they don't experience complications like lower limb amputations, heart attack or stroke, which nationally affect over 2,000 people each week.  Our approach has significantly reduced these complications across County Durham & Darlington. 

"There'll be a large group of us from across a range of specialties including consultants, diabetes specialist nurses, podiatrists and dieticians and we're really keen for people to just drop in. Obesity and smoking increase the risk of developing diabetes and we'll be offering advice on losing weight and giving up smoking.  We'll also have lots of written information for people to take away."

Debbie Calland lead diabetes lead specialist nurse for diabetes adds "We'll be right in the heart of the market place all day and look forward to meeting people either concerned that they or a loved one may be at risk, or who want to talk about managing their diabetes."
