Patient Safety

Why is patient safety important?

Patient safety is our number one priority. Our aims are all centred on enabling us to provide a safe service for our patients and staff.

CDDFT have signed up to a national patient safety campaign called Sign Up to Safety, we are doing everything we can to eliminate unnecessary harm. We are here for you.

Our aims are:

•To develop a well led, capable and motivated workforce

•To be efficient and make best use of available resources

•To deliver safe services

•To deliver the most effective outcomes

•To deliver the best possible experience for patients and staff

Our Patient Safety Midwives

CDDFT are fortunate to have two full time Patient Safety & Quality Midwives.

Ann Moody, Patient Safety & Quality Midwife, University Hospital of North Durham, ext 32103.

Joanne Dunn, Patient Safety & Quality Midwife, Darlington Memorial Hospital, ext 43192.

We act within in the role of governance which includes:

  • clinical audit
  • monitoring midwifery practice
  • highlighting service improvement
  • cascading any identified learning
  • contributing evidence to regional and national guidelines.

We closely observe any incidents that occur within the maternity service and we use an open and honest method to highlighting and sharing evidence of best practice.  We work closely with women who want to access care out of our Trust guidelines and also work closely in conjunction with internal and external safety forums including the Trust Patient Safety department, Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch HSIB, The Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths MBRACE, and Each Baby Counts EBC.

Patient Safety is our number one priority and we want you to know that if you have any questions or concerns please speak to a member of staff. Also if you have any suggestions as to how you think we can improve safety please contact on the details above.
