  How to get in touch

The chaplaincy office is situated on Level 1, close by staircase B and the entrance to Ward 5. It is next to the hospital chapel and is clearly signposted. You can visit the chaplains there or leave a message for them in their letterbox.

From outside the hospital, you can telephone the chaplaincy team on 0191 3332183.

From inside the hospital, you can telephone the team on extension 32183.

Urgent requests for a chaplain should be made through the hospital switchboard, who will page the on-call chaplain.

University Hospital

The Prayer Room

There is a dedicated prayer room with ablution facilities on the ground floor of the doctors' residence block (this is across the parking area from the A&E entrance). The chaplains or the security office can provide the entrance keycode. Dhuhr Prayers are said here most days at lunchtime; Friday prayers are at 1.30pm.

The Hospital Chapel

This is on level 1, clearly signposted, close by staircase B and Ward 5, open 24 hours for all to use. The chapel contains some unique, modern stained glass decorations. It also contains the book of remembrance for babies who died before or around the time of their birth.

.All patients, their families and friends, and staff are welcome to attend the services held there, or simply to visit the chapel for a time of quiet prayer or reflection.

Church Services in the Hospital Chapel

Sundays; 11.15 The Sunday Service (usually a service of Holy Communion).

Saturdays: 10.00am Holy Mass.

Patients requiring wheelchair transport to attend chapel should ask the ward staff to contact the chaplains and the portering service to arrange this. 

Shotley Bridge Hospital

This hospital no longer has a chapel but there is a small quiet room adjacent to Ward 2 in the tower block. This room contains the Shotley Bridge book of remembrance for babies who died before or around the time of their birth. All patients, their families and friends, and staff are welcome to us this room for a time of quiet prayer or reflection.

Chaplains visit the hospital, usually on a weekend. They can be contacted through the Chaplaincy office at University Hospital on 0191 333 2183, or more urgently by asking ward staff to have them paged.

  Chester le Street Hospital

This hospital has no chapel or quiet room at present.

Chaplains visit regularly, usually midweek.  They can be contacted through the Chaplaincy office at University Hospital on 0191 333 2183, or more urgently by asking ward staff to have them paged.
