About our service
Our Adult Bladder and Bowel Service provide a discreet and confidential service to both men and women. We recognise that talking about bladder and bowel problems is sensitive and can be embarrassing for many. Patients are initially assessed over the phone and triaged, then seen in a clinic environment; however, a home visit can be arranged if appropriate. Initial appointments take approximately 30 minutes, which include a review of:
- Symptom profile
- Urinary and bowel symptoms
- Impact on quality of life
- Lifestyle
- Medical and Surgical history
- Medication (in relation to bladder/bowel symptoms)
- Other investigations depending on symptoms: bladder scan, vaginal examination, rectal examination
Following your initial assessment, treatment options will be discussed with you and a plan of care agreed. We work alongside our medical and surgical colleagues to ensure that everyone receives a high standard of continence care, based on up to date knowledge and skills.
How to access our services
Our new digital self-referral removes any awkwardness, allowing patients to self-refer directly to the service without having to visit a GP or other health care professional. Instead, patients can self-refer directly.
Our Adult Bladder and Bowel Service is available to adults living within the County Durham and Darlington area. Clinics are held at various locations, but our team are based in Bishop Auckland.
