About our service

We provide a comprehensive range of general gastroenterology services across County Durham and Darlington, including specialist areas of interest:

  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • nutrition liver disease (viral alcoholic autoimmune and metabolic)
  • biliary disease
  • coeliac disease
  • interventional endoscopy
  • functional bowel disorder.

We work collaboratively with other specialist teams and services and hold regular multidisciplinary meetings to support diagnosis and treatment of many gastrointestinal diseases, including cancer.

Our consultant and nurse specialist staff work closely together in diagnostic procedures, treatment and patient support. Our department is also actively engaged in research teaching and training.

Our service operates from four hospital sites: University Hospital of North Durham, Darlington Memorial Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Shotley Bridge Hospital. Inpatient treatment facilities are based at University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital.
