About our service

Our 11 bedded combined High Dependency (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ITU) at Darlington Memorial Hospital cares for patients who are critically ill; providing advanced organ support and specialised monitoring. Patients may require Critical Care following a routine complex surgery, a life-threatening illness, or an injury.

Our large multidisciplinary team is made up of Doctors, Nurses, Health Care Support workers, Physiotherapists, Dietitians, Speech and Language Therapists, and many more. We also offer a Rehabilitation after Critical Illness (RaCI) service for those whose recovery from critical illness is prolonged. Our dedicated team of professionals offer individualised structured support that meets both the physical and physiological recovery needs of each individual patient.

Our Intensive Care Unit at Darlington Memorial Hospital can be found on the first floor and is divided across two locations. ITU 1 is an eight bedded unit to the left of the main lifts. We have a further four beds in our High Dependency Unit (HDU), located near Theatres. Access to HDU is gained by reception on ITU 1 – someone from our team will be on hand to provide directions.

You can contact us by telephone:

Our visiting times are from 11am to 3pm and from 5pm to 7pm. We ask that there are only two visitors to each bed space at any one time. Exceptional circumstances will be considered - please ask to speak to the Nurse in Charge and we will be happy to discuss this with you. We ask that all visitors follow Infection Prevention and Control measures by removing outside coats and performing hand hygiene before entering clinical areas.
