Databases and Specialist Resources

National and Regional Resources

The Library and Information Service subscribe to a number or resources that you can access via your Athens account. In the Downloads list opposite you will find a selection of helpsheets that will help you search some of the following resources:

• Knowledge and Library Hub connects NHS staff and learners to high quality knowledge and evidence resources, from journals, books and databases, policy and management information and research literature. It also has clinical decision support resources including NICE Guidelines and BMJ Best Practice.
• HDAS (Healthcare Databases Advanced Search) has now closed, but you can sign in here to access a wide range of databases with your NHS Athens account. You can also find links to access bibliographic databases including Medline, Embase and CINAHL from the providers websites at Health Education England, which in addition will provide you with materials to help you search effectively.
• Cochrane Database recognised world-wide for its high-quality, independent evidence. This database is freely available without the need for NHS Athens log-in.
• Trip Database Trip is a clinical search engine designed to allow users to quickly and easily find and use high-quality research evidence to support their practice and/or care.
• Emerald Insight - a database of articles on a range of subjects including: health and social care, HR, knowledge managment and sociology.

Specialist Resources

• UpToDate uses current evidence to answer clinical questions at the point of care. Provides peer-reviewed, evidence based synthesized information. Please note: you can record your activity and collect CME points while accessing UpToDate but you must register and access via NHS Athens to do so - click on the Log In prompt at the top right hand corner and follow the instructions. See Related Publications for more details (top right hand corner of this screen).
• BMJ Best Practice - a clinical decision-making tool, which uses the latest evidence-based research, guidelines and expert opinion, to offer step-by-step guidance on diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention.
• BMJ Case Reports - search the world's largest collection of clinical case reports. Instructions for Authors includes a user guide and help on how to submit cases. For fellowship code details please contact the library staff at Darlington or Durham.
• 123Doc Medical Exam provides high quality online practice questions and revision resources, tailored for junior doctors taking the MRCP, MRCPCH, MRCPsych, PLAB and FRCA examinations. Use your Athens login to create an account.
• The Royal Marsden - find evidence based clinical procedure guidelines and access them at work or at home.
